An Generosity of People We Don't Know: How a Man I Barely Knew Supported Me Land the Position That Changed My Life

During the late 1980s, I was beginning a budget travel adventure to the European continent with a travel partner. Because my travel mate was exploring starting a postgraduate program in NYC, we had arranged a 14-day stopover there on the way to London.

We arrived at the postgrad residence, a large multi-story edifice on the UWS known as International House. Setting down our luggage, we headed straight to the dining hall, where we picked up meals, took a seat, and started talking to people eating there.

Beside me was an individual of Iraqi origin pursuing an engineering degree at an Ivy League institution. He inquired what I my profession was, and I explained that I had just graduated with a scientific background and had been working on studies involving microscopic analysis.

He noted that there was an microscopy facility at Columbia University – adjacent to the engineering department, which was how he knew about it. He suggested that I should apply for a position with them. I dismissed the idea, explaining that I was heading off to Europe and, even more importantly, I lacked a US visa.

A day later I ventured out, returning to the canteen that night. The Iraqi student approached me and let me know that he had set up a meeting for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Given that he had made the arrangement, I attended the interview – but straight off told my prospective employer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

As is common in NYC – a metropolis where anything feels possible – she declared: “That can be arranged. When can you start?” I missed my plane to London.

I held that position for a trio of years. One of the benefits was that I got no-cost classes at Columbia, and I seized the chance to finish a graduate degree in global studies.

I never saw that student again and I don’t even know his name, but his incredible act of kindness transformed my future in so many ways. I would never have had the bravery or self-belief to approach someone at an Ivy League university and seek a position. Moreover, I had always wanted to take classes in another country, but lacked the financial means without that tuition waiver.

Critically, that job in New York paved the way for a role in Europe where I encountered my wonderful partner, with whom I now have four amazing children. This was a pivotal life event. That benevolent individual redirected my path in life, and I’m forever grateful.
