Crew Member Discloses Depression Following Deluge of Backlash Following Journey
A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after enduring a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also featured high-profile passengers.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, referring to a check-in call from a mission companion in the days following the landing.
She portrayed the news reports and online discourse as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on gynecological science and conducted tests during the flight, said everything she had worked for – from her scientific research and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her background – was overshadowed under the avalanche of gendered attacks.
She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
A Path to Recovery
Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she reports that the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.
She noted that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had resulted from the flight, including spotlight on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
The Historic Journey
The fully automated New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of space.
The diverse crew also comprised experts in various fields.
The company behind the mission is a private space firm launched by a Amazon founder.
