Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes are granted the ability to question specific calls made by the official, mirroring the practice currently in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step comes just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
